Domain Names

Of course you know what a domain name is - simply the name of your site. Your name should be considered in two parts - choosing the type (or domain) of the name, then choosing the specific name for your business.

Quick definition:- "A domain name is comprised of a unique combination of letters, numbers, or words usually describing or representing a business or company name and follows a meaningful format of www.yourname.com -- also referred to as a website address or URL. Without a domain name, your website will be difficult or impossible to find on the Internet by others and cumbersome to type or remember -- using the digital IP address.

"For the first part of the name, you'll want to select something that is meaningful.

There is never one right way to select the name for your website, and the styles for this change - as they do for all things. What is right for you will depend on your market.

For instance, if you have been in business for many years and you expect that most of the people who use your site will be returning customers, then using your business name is obvious.

If you business is expanding, or you want to target a specific area, then you could consider using the name of your town, area or county as part of your address, e.g. www.argyll-painter.co.uk

At one time, the vogue was to have a short name - often made up of initials only, now the fashion is to go for something more memorable (meaningful) no matter the length, e.g. www.greatinteriors-glasgow.biz

But there is an embargo on names longer than 64 digits!

Prices for the specific domains vary in price - we charge £10-30 per year for most names, but the exceptional ones like .TV will be more

There is no right or wrong - just the advice that your web name can be made to work best for you if you give it a little thought.
